What is Smoke Free Cambridgeshire aiming to achieve?
- To inform the public and other agencies of issues surrounding smoking and health.
- To help reduce the number of people in Cambridgeshire who smoke.
- To help prevent young people from starting to smoke.
- To help protect people of all ages from exposure to second-hand smoke.
- To encourage people who want to stop smoking to seek help from the NHS Stop Smoking Service in Cambridgeshire.
What does Smoke Free Cambridgeshire do?
- It works with NHS Trusts, local authorities, community partners, businesses and others to introduce smoke-free policies in workplaces and public places.
- It supports and co-ordinates annual No Smoking Day events in Cambridgeshire each March.
- It supports the enforcement of the ban on underage sales of tobacco products to children and measures to counter illicit tobacco sales.
- It provides information on the health impacts of environmental tobacco smoke and the broader smoke free agenda to health professionals, the public and the media.
- It takes part in media campaigns to raise awareness of the impact of tobacco and smoking on people in Cambridgeshire.
Seven good reasons to make public places Smoke Free in Cambridgeshire:
- Environmental tobacco smoke harms and kills: that’s a fact.
- Employers have a duty to protect their staff and clients.
- People have a right to a smoke-free environment.
- Most people strongly dislike environmental tobacco smoke.
- Children exposed to smoking role models and advertising are proven to be more likely to smoke.
- Smoking can cause fires, and does cause litter problems. Active smoke-free policies can help people to quit smoking.
Tobacco Control is everybody’s business, so what can you do?
- Familiarise yourself with smoke free policy and legislation, both as it pertains to your work and to your broader environment, i.e. your home, children’s schools and play centres, public facilities and business establishments – the law is in place to protect you, so ensure that you are informed and you know how to support and maintain a smoke free environment for you and your family in your day-to-day lives
- Be aware of the law regarding illicit sales (marketplaces, mobile units, street traders) and underage sales and, if you suspect an outlet of making an illicit or underage sale, please report it to you local Trading Standards office, who will investigate it
- Make yourself aware of local Stop Smoking Services, and if you (or someone close to you) are a current smoker, consider giving a quit attempt a go – smokers who decide to make a quit attempt can do with all the support they can get! Don’t be afraid to be the one to suggest your local Stop Smoking Service smokers you know – it may well be the gentle push they need.
- Do what you can to support World No Smoking Day, March 9th and World No Tobacco Day, May 31st 2011 – keep an eye out for local initiatives around the day, and see what you can do in your community and workplace to make something more of it!
