Smoking during pregnancy has been linked to a variety of health problems including premature birth, low birth weight, cot death, miscarriage, and breathing problems/wheezing in the first six months of life. By giving up smoking, you can help your baby get a healthier start in life.
Many women stop smoking when they find out they are pregnant, however a lot of women find it more difficult to stop. Our specialist advisors have been trained by midwives and we can provide home visits.
Both the baby and mother will benefit as soon as you stop smoking. The lungs will become smoke-free and the carbon monoxide and chemicals will quickly clear from the body.
Pregnant women who find it hard to stop smoking can use Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT). This should be discussed with a midwife, doctor or the specialist team at Camquit, who can give advice on the different NRT products.
NRT helps reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms associated with stopping smoking. Cigarettes contain at least 4,000 different chemicals that can adversely affect the health of the mother and baby.
Taking a short course of NRT is safer than staying a smoker. NRT does not contain the harmful chemicals found in tobacco.
NRT is free when pregnant and up to a year after the birth of your baby when you get support from a stop smoking service.
Here at Camquit we know how difficult it can be to stop smoking during pregnancy but you CAN do it.
